Meta Tags Expained
By this time everybody in web development knows what Meta Tags are. Today we have removed our Meta Tags Generator because a meta tag generator is typically for static sites where you would need to create tags for each page. Because websites are primarily content management systems (CMS), the need for a meta tag generator has gone by the wayside.
What are meta tags and how can you optimize them for SEO?
Meta tags are HTML or XHTML elements that provide structured metadata about a specific web page. These elements must be placed as tags within the head section of the HTML file.
More specifically, meta tags are the elements within every page of your site that tells search engines what that page is about. There are a couple tags that you really need to pay attention to:
- Title – The Title tag is the most important because it is what tells search engines like Google what that page is about. The title tag is the blue link that you see in Google’s search results (see image).
- Meta Description – As you can probably tell, the description tag is what tells the users what your page is about. Google does not use the Meta Description tag as one of the search criteria for rankings, but this should be written in a way so that it persuades customers to click on your page
- <Meta name=”robots” CONTENT=”noindex, nofollow”> – The robots tag is another crucial tag for your site. This tag tells crawlers if you would like them to follow, or index that particular page. If you don’t want that page to show in search results of Google, yahoo, bing or any other search engine, then you would use the tag above. Typically you do want search engines to craw and save your pages so you would the index, follow attribute.
